Tonight our cast provided a wonderful sneak peek of two dance numbers from the show during the first PSU Dance Showcase at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts. It was a standing-room only crowd, and our young actors didn't disappoint — especially considering that several of them had just learned 24 hours before of the death of a close friend and former cast mate, Derek Brumbaugh. Several wore blue ribbons on their shirts in his honor. These young actors and actresses are true professionals.

The show opens on March 25. Tickets will go on sale March 14!

Meet Will Jewett, our show choreographer. He's the one on the floor.

Could it be that he fell into a theatre-induced coma brought about by his schedule? Coming right off of a State performance of Pittsburg High School's musical "Band Geeks," he now has a principal role — "Donkey!" — in PHS's "Shrek, The Musical," which is in rehearsal every weekday from 3:30 to 6 p.m. and most weekends from 1 to 8 p.m. He is the choreographer for "Nottingham," an upcoming YMCA's Show Biz Kids production also now in rehearsal. He dances with the Academy, and recently choreographed a flash mob for his mom's college students at Pittsburg State University. He has a role in "Junie B. Jones." And oh yeah — he was just named a Kansas Honors Scholar for his academic achievements in the top 10 percent of his senior class!

But that's not the reason Will is on the floor. He blames Gladys Gutzman. She's the lunch lady. She's also a musical number in "Junie B. Jones" that is especially tricky. Will worked and worked with the cast on cleaning up the 16 count. It was a long night. We have every confidence in the talents of both Will and the cast, however, and know it will be nothing but 120 percent come performance time! It always is. Because that's how PCT rolls.

P.S. Will's mom informs us that his room is a disaster! This makes us feel better. Turns out he's normal, after all!

Show and Tell: Music Edition

Music Director MJ Harper gives notes to McKenna Shaw, who plays the lead character in "Junie B. Jones The Musical," in a Green Room vocal rehearsal.
It's been three years since I have lived in the first grade world. Sure, I give voice and piano lessons to a first grader, and there's a second grade girl I teach violin and ukulele to ... but one on one is different than a set of 24 unique Littles of the first grade variety for a 30-minute music class.

Jumping headfirst into the musical version of "Junie B. Jones" was like coming home. It tasted like "hey, I remember this ... and I loved it!" That doesn't mean this music is easy, it's just very accessible and kid-friendly. From the sweet ragtime of "When Life Gives You Lemons" to the hard rock of "Show and Tell" to the 1950s-60s-era "Lucille, Camille, Chenille" and the many "shoo bee" transitions, there's something for everyone in the family to tap their toe to.

The cast worked intensively to piece the music together for the show in just three days. That requires an abundance of dedicated practice outside of regularly scheduled rehearsals, not to mention quick learners with good ears and great attitudes. Now, onto choreography and blocking!

Exploring life through the eyes of Junie B. Jones awakens the magic of what life was like when YOU were a tiny human. Everything is new. Every event is the BEST THING EVER. Every stumble in the road is a tragedy of epic proportions. Whether you know an elementary student currently, or simply remember "the good old days," this musical is the show to see!

Production dates: March 24 for schools, March 25-26 for the public. Tickets will be on sale soon at www.memorialauditorium.org
