South Pacific Character Synopsis

​​
  • Nellie Forbush: A young and optimistic U.S. Navy nurse from Little Rock, Arkansas, stationed on a remote island during World War II. She's spirited, naive, and falls in love with Emile de Becque.
  • Emile de Becque: A sophisticated French plantation owner on the island, he's a mysterious and romantic figure with a dark past. He falls deeply in love with Nellie.
  • Bloody Mary: A native Tonkinese woman who acts as a shrewd entrepreneur on the island. She's manipulative yet caring, particularly towards her daughter Liat, and she plays a pivotal role in the story's unfolding.
  • Lieutenant Joseph Cable: A young and idealistic Marine officer, stationed on the island for a top-secret mission. He struggles with his own prejudices and falls in love with Liat, which complicates his beliefs and mission.
  • Luther Billis: A fun-loving and mischievous sailor, often providing comic relief. He's a close friend to Nellie and has his own romantic misadventures on the island.​

  • Liat: The beautiful and innocent daughter of Bloody Mary. She falls in love with Lieutenant Cable, despite the societal and racial barriers that stand between them.
  • Captain George Brackett: The pragmatic and authoritative commander of the U.S. Navy base on the island. He oversees the activities of the sailors and nurses, trying to maintain order and discipline amidst the chaos of war.
  • Commander William Harbison: A no-nonsense officer who serves alongside Captain Brackett. He's dedicated to his duties and provides support to his fellow servicemen and women.
  • Ngana and Jerome: Emile de Becque's mixed-race children from his previous marriage. They bring warmth and innocence to the story, serving as a reminder of the complexities of racial dynamics in the South Pacific.
