The Pittsburg Community Theatre’s Spring 2025 production of Lend Me a Tenor is a madcap comedy that delivers nonstop laughter. Set in 1934, the story follows a single day in the life of Cleveland’s Grand Opera Company. Their much-anticipated production of Otello is at stake as they await the arrival of famed Italian tenor Tito Merelli, also known as “Il Stupendo.” However, Tito’s grand entrance takes a chaotic turn when he arrives late, exhausted, and in a sour mood, exacerbated by his jealous wife’s suspicions. A comedy of errors unfolds when Tito accidentally overdoses on tranquilizers, and the opera’s director, Saunders, mistakenly believes him to be dead. In a desperate bid to save the show, Saunders convinces his jittery assistant, Max, to impersonate Tito in full costume and makeup, igniting a night of mistaken identities, romantic mishaps, and outrageous situations. Adding to the mayhem are Tito's fiery wife, a starstruck soprano, an ambitious bellhop, and a bevy of socialites, all vying for the “tenor’s” attention. As characters rush in and out of suites, unaware of each other's schemes, the show builds to a crescendo of hilarious misunderstandings, culminating in a surprise-filled finale that brings down the house.
